Ever since my last blog post I've actually moved away from playing the original gameboy advance. The reason being? The battery life is a little lacking. Not sure if it was always bad, or if it's a sign of it's age.
But my retro gaming antics have not stopped with the gameboy...
No...
I now introduce...
[Happy wheels victory trumpet sfx] The R36S! ("Yay", "Yay", "Yippee") = the crowd
*Slaps device* This bad boy doesn't just have the sexy form factor of the original gameboy, it's packed full of any retro emulator you could want. And all for the low low price of [Price varies depending on seller]
Seriously though, this thing is actually awesome and I only got it for around 20 pounds (Actually I think less). It runs on a linux distro I believe, it's the OS version of RetroArch. The version I got I believe is actually a clone, but this product is so amazing even the fake clones are still great. Having said that, I do plan on getting new SD cards for it so I can flash the latest version of RetroArch onto them. People also say that the SD cards included are a little flaky, so it'll be good to upgrade them anyway.
But you don't care about all that (Or if you do, I'll probably do an upgrade blog post later when I get around to it)... No, you probably want to know what I've been doing with it. Or at least, that's what I wanna talk about so suck it up.
Of course, the first game I played was Pokemon Emerald. And yes, I will keep playing this and providing pokemon updates. Unfortunately, without some special hardware I cannot transfer my cartridge save game to the emulator, so I instead played through to the same point. And even painstakingly caught each of the pokemon I had before. So all my favorites: Blem, Rei, Skye, Ziggy, and Ralts are back. I do now have a true 6th member, but that will be a story for a later blog post. Anyway, I will be playing this more but for now I have been checking out other games. Like...
Fire Emblem... I actually have barely played any Fire Emblem game outside of a demo of Awakening on the 3DS. So as my first true entry to the series, I figured I'd start with the first one avaliable to the US on the GBA, just called Fire Emblem. So far the gameplay is fun, I actually really like the controls and simplicity. It very much feels like a kind of Chess, simple to play hard to master. I can tell I'll have a lot of fun playing this. Also... Lyndis is a baddieeeeee
I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure this game got a re-release on the switch recently. Either way, I'm sure the original is the best version. I remember playing this as a kid on my Dad's old Gameboy. I think I only got a few worlds in, I seem to remember a ghost world. Either way this game is a great spin on the usual Mario formula, making it more like a puzzle game with each level having a correct way to solve it and get the high score and all bonus 'Presents'. and the boss fights are an interesting take on the original donkey kong fights from the arcade games. Also... Donkey Kong is a baddieeeeeee
This is a different one. Just like most my consoles, I was stuck on old tech for most my childhood. So while people had their PS3 and PS4, I was playing PS1 and PS2. And this game on PS1, is an underated title that I really think was one of the best. As a kid this terrified me, but also the sense of exploration in this is really amazing, and investigating the space station and shooting all kinds of enemies really is so much fun even replaying it now. The one downside is that the control scheme is a little annoying. It uses tank controls, meaning that turning is a bit of a pain especially when doing so while moving. Also... the queen xenomorph is- okay I'll stop.
Finally... Earthbound. I never played this game before. I've always wanted to, I've always heard amazing things about the game and even recently someone I know has sworn it is one of the greatest games of all time. So now, finally with this system I have picked up the game. Now I am still not too far into it, but already I can see it has so much charm. It's silly, intriguing, and apparently (Not seen anything too bad yet) very very sad. Gameplay wise it's actually surprisngly fun even by todays standards. It's a pretty standard JRPG, but the battes feel like they are more like a visual novel. There always seems to be some interesting dialogue or funny little line inbetween hits. It really adds such a great charm to the game, and I'm really looking forward to getting deeper into it.
For now, those are all the games I've delved into so far. I plan to play a lot more games on this device, but for now I will probably be sticking to these 5, and just switching a new game in once I am finished with another. I really want to get some of these games completed 100%, because I'm loving going back through all these amazing games I've missed over the years.
By the way, you get bonus epic points if you know what this blog title is referencing...
